Israel stakes claim while Trump takes aim

By David Singer - posted Friday, 11 April 2025

2. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on 1 April:

“We will not abandon the security of settlers or allow [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud] Abbas and the Palestinian Authority to use illegal construction as a tool to create a strategic threat against the settlements... The West Bank is the heart of Israel, and we will protect it with every means necessary.”

Any thought of creating a state between Israel and Jordan in Gaza and Judea and Samaria (West Bank) is dead and buried following these two announcements and Trump’s earlier decision to treat Gaza as a separate territorial entity.

Trump’s decision, when announced, could prevent Israel claiming sovereignty in all of Judea and Samaria (West Bank), requiring Israel and Jordan to negotiate on allocating sovereignty between their two respective States.

Trump could possibly demand Jordan and Israel negotiate on the Saudi-based 2022 Hashemite Kingdom of Palestine solution, excluding Gaza, to create a new territorial entity comprising Jordan and about 30% of Judea and Samaria (West Bank), with the remaining 70% being incorporated into Israel by redrawing the existing international border between Israel and Jordan.

Trump could announce his decision during his meeting with Netanyahu this week or in Saudi Arabia when he visits in May.

Meantime, Israel has staked its claim.
