My generation

By John Töns - posted Tuesday, 2 September 2008

Is the sudden interest a product of the fascination that some have in the fact that we are still determined not to die before we get old? Is it silent amazement that we have not lost our marbles?

Is there a fear that we may blow the whistle on Kevin Rudd and his rather insane notion that working 18-hour days is a good thing?

Is there a fear that we may create envy as we enjoy our leisure?

Is there a concern that our health may be too robust and that we will have spent all of the kids’ inheritance before we finally consent to shuffle of this coil?

Is it perhaps the economic collapse that will follow once we are dead - just think of all the aged care workers, the personal trainers and the cruise liners that will suddenly lose their clientele.

No, I think the real fear is that we will mock the futile efforts of generation X and Y. But then again we are probably to blame for that: it seems those conceived under the influence of purple haze were conceived at the shallow end of the gene pool.
