The wonderful world of Wendy's whimsies

By Wendy Wonderwal - posted Saturday, 15 July 2000

Greetings, gorgeous ones.

Welcome back. Feeling brave are we?

I should warn you that the following sites, while chosen with great care, have only a slender relationship with this edition’s theme. And when I say slender, I mean really, really, really skinny. (Ed.: How unusual, Wendy.)

But let’s not dally.

Ever wondered what we’ll do when we finally flush this planet down the um, er, toilet? Why, go to another one of course!

We have the technology to help us pick our next victim. Which is, I suspect, what the Galileo journey to Jupiter is all about.

Want to find Jupiter from your own backyard?

I can’t even find my mind, much less the front door, but even I found Jupiter courtesy of this site: www.jpl.nasa.gov/galileo.

After that little journey, I started thinking about all sorts of scientific guff, like fractals and crystals. And slinkies. And what are slinkies, I hear you ask? Kinetic sculptures of course! Well, a kind person would describe them as kinetic sculptures.

Want to check out an Australian slinky? Just go to: www.firstpr.com.au/slinky/ and be amazed, be very amazed.

And for those of you with a more serious bent who actually understand fractals and the physics of snow crystals, you might like to cruise on over to: www.library.thinkquest.org/3120/ (for the fractally minded), and to: www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals for those who want to know how to tell a hollow column from a stellar dendrite.

We just liked looking at the pretty pictures. Ooooooaaaaahh, beautiful!

And then I started thinking again, which is a very dangerous thing. After all, I might overexercise and strain my brain! Which is why I visited the de Bono Institute for a spot of preventative maintenance. You can too, just by hitting: www.debono.org.

And as a suitable antidote for all that heavy thinking, Web Mistress Cathie Walker at her Centre for the Easily Amused has created a Short Attention Span Site of the Week.

What was the middle bit again?

Oh yes, just go to: www.amused.com/sass.html - I can personally recommend the fun stuff at www.bunnygrenade.com. What a hoot!

But if you want a site to get young people (and adults too) thinking about the ecological problems faced by the indigenous Quichua people in the Ecuadorian Amazon, you should go immediately to: www.eduweb.com/amazon.html.

They have interactive sections which encourage visitors to work out best-possible crop rotation cycles and juggle coffee, cacao and maize production with three strategies in mind - high income, conservation alone and balancing conservation with agriculture.

See, it really wasn’t THAT skinny!

Until next time, dear reader.
