Statement from concerned representatives of Australian Universities

By 416 University Professionals - posted Tuesday, 5 October 2004

As teachers, researchers, honorary research affiliates and administrators in the universities of Australia we have a professional responsibility to attain the highest possible standards of integrity and accountability. We have to be trustworthy. The same standards should be expected of everyone in public life.

We are therefore dismayed by the dishonesty that has characterised the conduct of the Howard Government. Among many examples of duplicity, the Australian public has been lied to about the children of asylum seekers being thrown overboard, has been deceived over claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and lied to again over the reasons for participating in the war in Iraq. That war has had catastrophic consequences for the Iraqi people, and has made the world far less safe from the violence of terrorism as well as from the violence perpetrated by the armed forces of different states.

This Federal election provides an opportunity for both Mr Howard and Mr Latham to pledge that they will insist on truth and genuine accountability in government.

It is time to reassert the values of impartiality and decency in public service and to restore Australia’s reputation for honest and independent government. In the last weeks of the election campaign the leaders of the major parties are asked to address these issues. They should not be allowed to avoid them.
