Western exceptionalism

The left isn't "enthusiastic for any culture but their own". It is merely agitating for what was promised by Western civilization itself.

If I were a Christian, someone who accepts that God moves in mysterious ways, I might conclude that an open borders policy is a subtle aspect of his plan, a modern-day manifestation of the test the West has been shirking since the day his son died on the cross for speaking truth to power. After two millennia, a reckoning has arrived. Time for the self-professed defenders of freedom to find the courage to elevate their hearts above the stable conceptions of their anxious and mutinous minds.

Tony Abbott, Donald Trump and other patriots can go on pandering to fear. They can take comfort in the belief that non-Western countries are shitholes. They can go on protecting civilization rather than face what is demanded of them. They can even describe themselves as followers of Jesus. But please don't, for Christ's sake – as my spiritual-but-not-religious father was fond of saying – continue to make out that the West is somehow exceptional.
