Why are we still struggling with gender equality?

By Conrad Liveris - posted Wednesday, 5 March 2014

Gender discussions occur across a breadth of areas. However, it is women who bear the brunt of putting their case. Women are being expected to explain why the inequality they suffer is unjust, rather than those perpetrating the inequality.

Modern women face pregnancy discrimination, domestic violence, economic limitation, poverty in retirement and the glass ceiling amongst so many other things. The belief in merit and equality in opportunity in Australia is high, but women still face challenges.

It was merely 1895 that Oscar Wilde was tried for being a homosexual, how far we've come. We now have the President of the United States, Prime Minister of the UK, countless Christian leaders and distinct pressure on the Australian Prime Minister to support marriage equality. Women have been more obviously oppressed for a greater length of time. Indeed, women could never be out of sight or out of mind.

Women's empowerment is a national priority, but treated like a fluffy issue. But with women being slightly more than 50% of the population, have got to take women seriously. We do have the tools to change this, but we are still lacking the will.
