And in the MJA article about the German doctors we read about genocide. Genocide of the Jews and genocide of people regarded as being imperfect or less than human by the German medical profession – or at least those who cooperated – and as the MJA article points out, the German medical profession had been discussing eugenics since 1871.
What are we doing?
We get bitterly accused if we raise the Nazi card. But we must heed what happened in Nuremberg and heed the declarations made in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1947 to ensure that such atrocities should never happen again.
Down syndrome people are people who can love and live and be free and experience high quality lives of value to themselves and others. Down syndrome people should never be aborted. Expectant parents should never be labelled "genetic outlaws" and it should be illegal to sue your parents for "wrongful life".
What do we need to do? We need to talk. We need to teach. And we need to remember.
