China from the inside out

By Brian Hennessy - posted Wednesday, 15 February 2012

Anything that doesn't combine both perspectives is cultural fluff. The kind of stuff which misinforms whole populations, and perpetuates prejudice. Mind you, the Chinese do this also, but I think you get my point: we have an uncensored media and should expect better from it.

Anyway, where was I. Oh yes, I remember: China has been seeping slowly through the pores of my skin and into my bones. The changes in thinking are subtle and unnoticed. Navigating this place literally and figuratively has become second nature. Chinese friends remarking, "Lao Bu, what you just did, was very Chinese." Making me feel at home while at the same time thinking, "What did I do just now that was different?"

I'll take that as a compliment.
