Pauline Hanson’s long farewell

By Alice Aslan - posted Monday, 17 May 2010

But it is especially the manipulation of this human weakness at times by politicians and the media that dents in trust and co-operation among people in society, and causes racism, discrimination and even ethnic conflicts.

Although Hanson’s approaching farewell has been welcomed by those who prefer an inclusive, multicultural society, the only way to prevent far right politics from flourishing is to explain to people that specific local and global economic, social and political factors are the cause of certain problems in society but not the Aboriginal Australians, migrants or refugees.

At the same time, a robust multicultural society can only be built by a genuine political culture with the motto “everyone matters” and by politicians who look after everyone’s interests, whether they are Anglo, indigenous, migrant or refugee.

And it wouldn’t be surprising if one day, Pauline Hanson, a passionate woman who has no fear of going to extremes, ends up falling in love with a Muslim man and moving to a Muslim country. After all, love is blind.
