Paul Mitchell
Paul Mitchell has been Secretary General of the ICMM since September 2003. He is responsible for policy development on a broad range of issues including mining and its links to economic development, human rights and biodiversity. He is a member of the World Bank’s Advisory Committee on Extractive Industries.
Between 1999 and 2003, he was CEO of CARE Australia, a member of CARE International which is the world’s largest development and emergency assistance NGO operating in over 70 of the world’s poorest countries.
From 1994 to 1999 Paul was Chief Executive for Australasia of Environmental Resources Management (ERM), a leading environmental and engineering services company.
From 1980 to 1994 he held two director level positions in professional consultancies, mainly providing environmental services to the resources industry.
From 1978 to 1980 he was with the NSW Department of Environment and Planning.
He was educated in Australia and the USA, and has qualifications in earth and engineering sciences, regional planning and business management. In 2004 he was admitted to the Order of Australia for services to the community, environmental resources management and planning.
