November 2001 - What should Australia's defence and security priorities be?In the wake of a number of recent events: East Timorese independence; the September 11 attacks and subsequent bombing of Afghanistan; and the increased attention to the problem of global claims for refugee status, we wonder what Australia needs to do to protect the peace and safety we cherish. Must we rely on the strength of our armed forces, or is there a way to relieve them of some of the burden? If there is no alternative, how much is enough?
