Making a decision so difficult requires support, not condemnation

By Cyndi Tebbel - posted Friday, 23 July 2004

Am I pro-abortion? Yes. Do I think we should do more to reduce the number of abortions in Australia each year? Absolutely. If one thing is clear, it's that noone wants to be in the position of having to decide whether or not to have an abortion. An abortion is not, as some suggest, a "feminist badge of honour" or "a rite of passage".

The prevalence of abortion is not about dishonouring life but rather a direct result of woefully inadequate contraception and the vagaries of human nature. Nothing bar abstinence is foolproof.

Until we can guarantee contraception that will prevent fertilisation until an individual or couple is willing to see a pregnancy to full term, and beyond, we must accept the fact of abortion and support the people who make the decision to have one.

It can never be a decision left to others.
