For there is another higher unasked question to be posed once we’ve confronted whether or not love depends on interlocking equipment. We need to push on and face up to the irony, have the adult conversation about the implications of relying on the real and tangible to collectively satisfy what is essentially personal and spiritual in nature.
For most, this is the underlying yet muted message of those troubled by gay marriage.
When are we to admit politics cannot redeem humanity? What price must Western culture and tradition pay in the interim? After needed social reforms, homosexuals now have the potential to live their lives, proudly assuming positions of power across government and business. But, no, this is not enough. Democracy must “go all the way” and if that means destroying the institution of marriage – and, indeed, democracy itself – then so be it.

A significant, non-homophobic, non-racist, irreligious and intelligent section of Western society is increasingly riled by the smug conclusions peddled by vested interests and blinkered journalists. Acknowledge all this, and we might just get somewhere better.
